Ian from MadsRC is back with a rather thorough examination of DJI’s latest foray into FPV racing—namely, the O4 Race Mode. It turns out this new feature is exclusive to the O4 Pro and Lite units, requiring the most up-to-date DJI Goggles 3 or N3. The race mode promises to tidy up the RF spectrum by aligning video and telemetry on the same frequency. Essentially, it might just keep your channels from squabbling like children over toy blocks.
As for latency, the O4 Pro boasts a respectable 15ms, while the Lite lags behind at 20ms—still a far cry from HD Zero’s gold standard. While improvements are evident, one can’t help but wonder if DJI is still playing catch-up in this particular arena. Ian’s practical testing suggests that while race mode enhances latency, it doesn’t necessarily trounce standard mode in terms of performance under pressure. So, don’t expect miracles just yet.
A welcome perk of this race mode is its reduced interference with other systems. It seems DJI has managed to corral the telemetry within the same frequency as the video, allowing for smoother compatibility with rivals like HD Zero. However, when it comes to video output, DJI users may find themselves gnashing their teeth, as solutions like CosmoStreamer come with their own licensing headaches.
In summary, DJI’s O4 race mode could be viewed as a commendable step forward, albeit with a few hurdles still to overcome. If you fancy a more detailed exploration, do have a gander at Ian’s full video here:
