Emlid Reach RS3: Surveying with a Tilted Twist Under $3K

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

The Emlid Reach RS3 is making quite a splash in the surveying world, and not just because it’s got a tilt feature that would make any physics teacher weep with joy. Priced under £3,000, this little beauty comes with an IMU that allows for tilt compensation—yes, your plumb rod can finally take a holiday.

Setting up this gadget is as easy as pie. Just power it on, download the Emlid Flow app, and let it do the hard work of locating itself. Once you’ve gone through the correction input options—NTRIP over Bluetooth is a solid bet—you’ll be collecting data faster than you can say “Bob’s your uncle.”

Now, let’s chat about efficiency. We put it to the test and found that using the tilt compensation feature reduced our survey time by half. Yes, half! It seems that the RS3’s clever little IMU can save you both time and possibly a few tantrums out there in the field.

And if you’re wondering about accuracy—fear not. The RS3 maintains precision within a couple of centimetres even when tilted at alarming angles. So, if you’re contemplating upgrading your surveying kit, this might just be the tool to consider.
