RunCam has made quite the splash with its latest offerings: the WiFiLink VRX and WiFiLink 2 VTX modules. These gadgets aim to demystify the world of digital FPV flying, steering us away from the labyrinthine DIY setups that typically leave many of us entangled in a web of wires and confusion. Ian from MadsRC gives us the lowdown on these new toys, with a particular focus on the OpenIPC firmware, whilst promising even more insights down the line.
Starting with the WiFiLink VRX module, which comes in at about £99 (or thereabouts), it’s designed for simplicity. Gone are the days of fiddling about with complex installations; it’s got a fan, joystick controls, and even an SD card slot for those who fancy recording their aerial escapades. Meanwhile, the WiFiLink 2 VTX is a significant upgrade, boasting 1080p at 90 FPS and featuring a heat sink to avoid turning into a mini sauna mid-flight. Both modules play nice with DJI pinouts, making integration as easy as pie—provided you have the right tools, of course.
Setting everything up is fairly straightforward, though it’s worth noting that a 3D-printed bracket might be required to hold the VRX in place—because what’s a tech product without the occasional trip to the printer? As for the flights, Ian had a bit of a bumpy start with stuttering issues that he bravely linked to default power settings. He did manage to iron out some of the gremlins with a few tweaks, but let’s just say we’re not quite ready to toss out our trusty DJI gear just yet.
For those looking to get their hands dirty, the full review from Ian offers a treasure trove of details. So, if you fancy diving deeper into the world of RunCam’s latest gear, check out his video linked below—and perhaps keep a cup of tea handy; you might need it after all the excitement.
