Transforming a Toy into an FPV Spy Heli: The DJI O4 Adventure!

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

Welcome to another episode of ‘How to Make a Toy Look Like It’s Up to No Good’. This time, we’re taking the rather mediocre RCEra C128 Sentry and transforming it into a bona fide FPV spy helicopter, thanks to the magnificent DJI O4 system. Spoiler alert: it’s not just a case of slapping on a new camera; there’s a proper teardown involved—and yes, it’s as messy as it sounds.

We kicked things off by removing the original, utterly useless camera (seriously, it would have been more effective as a doorstop) and made space for the DJI O4. Armed with a 3D printed mount and some questionable engineering decisions, we managed to cram it all in there. Naturally, soldering was required, which always makes for an exciting morning—nothing like potential electrocution to get the adrenaline pumping.

After a few too many ‘will it work’ moments and a test flight that nearly turned into a low-budget horror film (thanks to low voltage), we found ourselves soaring through the skies, albeit slightly askew due to the wind. Who knew chasing chickens could be such a blast?

Final verdict? While it’s no high-end machine, this little beast has sparked a flame of curiosity for what might come next—perhaps a brushless frame with all the bells and whistles. If you fancy giving it a go yourself, remember: it’s all fun and games until someone loses a drone.
