Unlocking Head Tracking: The Caddx Avatar GT Kit Gimbal Mod Explained

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

Ian from MadsRC has taken a closer look at the new Caddx GM series gimbals that allow for pass-through head tracking when paired with the Avatar HD system. This is all well and good, until you consider the rather cheeky timing of the GT high power two-watt VTX release, which, rather inconveniently, doesn’t officially support this feature. A classic case of “you can’t have your cake and eat it too,” it seems.

The compatibility issues stem from the gimbals requiring a USB connection, while the new GT VTX comes equipped only with an SD card update capability. Confused? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Ian points out that the gimbals are compatible with newer Caddx VTXs, but the GT’s design choices leave many scratching their heads.

For those brave enough to take matters into their own hands, Ian offers a workaround involving a bit of soldering wizardry. By accessing the internal TX and RX port of the GT VTX, you can create an external connection for your gimbal. Just make sure your soldering skills are sharper than a British wit; precision is key here, and it’s not as daunting as it sounds—unless you’re all thumbs.

If you fancy giving it a go, make sure to check out the full guide. Who knows, you might just find yourself enjoying a delightful tête-à-tête with your drone’s head tracking capabilities after all.
