Hey everyone,
New to the FPV game here and hoping to get some advice from the more experienced pilots. I’m putting together a setup with the Walksnail Moonlight and GM3 Gimbal, and I’m trying to decide between the Avatar Goggles X and the Goggles L. I’ve also got a few questions about batteries.
I reached out to Unmanned Tech support, and they were super helpful. I wanted to share their response here, along with a detailed comparison they put together, to get your opinions and hopefully help others who are in the same boat.
Initial Question about Connectors and Goggle Choice:
Originally, I was confused about the power connector on the Avatar Goggles L (turns out it’s a DC 5.5 x 2.1mm barrel connector, not XT60, however a barrel to XT60 cable is inlcuded). I also wasn’t sure if the Goggles L would be a good match for the Moonlight and GM3, or if I should go for the Goggles X.
Unmanned Tech’s Response (from David):
David from Unmanned Tech cleared up the connector confusion (thanks!). He also mentioned that the Goggles X are significantly more expensive than the Goggles L. He recommended trying them out if possible, or looking at online reviews to compare, since it’s hard to judge just from specs.
Further Question about Goggle Disappointment:
I followed up asking if I’d be disappointed with the Goggles L.
Unmanned Tech’s Response (from David/Alex):
David said it really depends on what I’m after. The Goggles X are better goggles overall, but the price-to-performance ratio might not be as good as the Goggles L. Alex then provided a really detailed comparison (see below) to help me decide.
Detailed Goggles Comparison (provided by Alex from Unmanned Tech):
Alex at Unmanned Tech provided a fantastic breakdown of the two goggles. Here’s a summary, along with a spec table:
Walksnail Avatar HD Goggles X
- Target: Experienced pilots who want the best visual experience and future-proofing.
- Pros: 100Hz refresh rate (smoother visuals), 50° FOV, HDMI in/out (versatile), modular VRX (upgradable), built-in gyro (head tracking), lightweight (290g).
- Cons: Higher price.
Walksnail Avatar HD Goggles L
- Target: Beginners and budget-conscious pilots.
- Pros: Affordable, head tracking, 75° FOV (wider field of view), decent 1080p visuals, long-range transmission.
- Cons: 60Hz refresh rate, no HDMI in/out, not modular, heavier (350g).

Key Takeaways from the Comparison:
- Performance: Goggles X generally offer better performance (smoother visuals), but Goggles L might have better bitrate and latency in some situations.
- Value: Goggles L are more affordable, but Goggles X might be a better long-term investment due to modularity.
- Compatibility: Both are compatible with a wide range of FPV drones, RC cars, and fixed-wing aircraft.
Battery Recommendations (provided by Alex):
Alex also gave some battery recommendations for the Moonlight/GM3 and the Goggles L:
- Voltage: 2S-6S LiPo (7.4V - 22.2V)
- Connector: XT60 (for most FPV gear)
- Capacity:
- Goggles: 1000-1500mAh
- Moonlight/GM3: 1300-1800mAh or larger

My Questions for the Community:
- Goggles Choice: Based on this info, and considering I’m using the Moonlight and GM3, which goggles would you recommend? Is the 100Hz refresh rate of the Goggles X worth the extra cost? Is the larger FOV of the L model a big deal?
- Battery Thoughts: Any other battery recommendations besides the ones listed? Any brands you particularly like or dislike?
Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.
